If you have experienced some sort of accident, like a broken joint or bone, you might have had to undergo surgery to get it replaced. Although the surgery is very important to the healing process, once you leave the hospital, you are not done. An equally important part is the physical therapy and rehabilitation services that follow. Here are some things that you need to know about rehab.
1. You May Need Inpatient Services
Some surgeries, like a hip replacement, or any major surgery of a bone or ligament, might need a long time to heal. In the process, your body will begin to lose muscle and ability if you are not using the damaged area daily. For this reason, you might be required to stay in some sort of inpatient rehabilitation program, such as at Hillcrest Nursing Center, where you will get around-the-clock treatment.
You will have to do exercises daily and keep up a strict schedule for a good deal of time after the surgery. Usually you will stay in the inpatient facility until you are able to take care of yourself and/or have mastered the exercises.
2. You May Need To Relearn Things
Many people take their body for granted. Simple things like walking, moving your fingers, or rolling your ankles are all second nature to you. But after an accident or major surgery, you may have to relearn things that used to be automatic.
Some people get really frustrated with physical therapy. This is not because the physical therapist is not helpful or accommodating. Instead, it is because it is frustrating to have to go through and learn things that should be easy. Don't give up! It may be frustrating, but you will eventually heal if you keep up with your treatment.
3. Healing Will Vary
It would be wonderful to promise that every person who enters physical therapy will completely heal and be back to their normal selves, but this is not always the case. Depending on your surgery and the severity of the injury, you may have permanent damage that even the best physical therapist cannot reverse. This doesn't mean that you should give up all together. If you do, you will risk missing out on returning to a high level of functioning. It simply means that high intensity activities might not be wise to participate in after a serious injury.
