Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a way for women to replace the estrogen lost when entering into and going through menopause. It also helps in preventing bone loss and reducing the risks of osteoporosis later in life. Not all women opt for HRT. Hot flashes come on quickly and can make you feel as though nothing can stop this burning sensation. Having hot flashes at night can cause a loss of beneficial sleep. You can try a few home remedies to ease these hot sensations.
- Exercise is important for everyone, and even more so for the menopausal woman. Exercising regularly helps strengthen the vascular system, which is involved in hot flashes.
- Peppermint essential oil has a cooling effect. You can place a few drops on a handkerchief and inhale it slowly and deeply during a hot flash to head off the burning sensation.
- Deep breathing can help, too. Taking slow deep breaths can help reduce the intensity and frequency of hot flashes.
- Eat more berries. Berries contain bioflavonoids, which can help ease or reduce menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes.
- Eliminate spicy foods from your diet. Hot and spicy foods cause blood vessels to dilate and may trigger hot flashes.
Changes in hormonal balance can bring on moodiness and in some women, a dark or depressed mood. This is normal, but it does not mean you have to live with it. One herb found to help combat the moodiness associated with menopause is black cohosh.
