How To Test The Battery Charger For Your Electric Wheel Chair

Posted on

You need to keep your electric wheelchair charged in order for it to work properly. If the wheelchair loses power and you can't replace it, you will have to locate the problem and get it fixed. The first part you should test is the battery charger for the wheelchair to make sure it is operating properly. This is something most people can do alone at home. If your wheelchair has lost power and you want to test the battery charger, here is how you can do it.

Test Electrical Circuit

You should do a quick test to make sure the electrical circuit on the wheelchair is complete. You do this by turning on the wheelchair and pushing the control arm into the "Drive" position. If you hear the murmuring of the motor trying to operate, you know that the electrical circuit is good and you should then test the battery to make sure it is charging properly.

Measure Voltage in Battery

The first thing you need to do is measure the voltage in the battery pack while it is in its discharge state. You do this by using a multimeter. A multimeter is a tool that electricians use to measure voltage, current, and resistance. Disconnect the battery pack from the wheelchair. Normally, there is a harness on the wires to connect the battery pack to the wheelchair. Separate the harness to disconnect the battery pack. Set the dial on the multimeter to the 200 volt DC scale setting.

The multimeter has two cables. One is a red cable and the other one is black. Turn on the multimeter and attach the red cable to the positive terminal on the battery and the black cable to the negative terminal. You will get a base reading of how much voltage the battery is retaining.

Connect Battery Charger

Now that you have measured the voltage in the discharged battery, you need to measure if it is getting a charge when you plug in the battery charger. Plug the battery charger into the wheelchair.  Reconnect the red cable of the multimeter to the positive terminal and the black cable to the negative terminal and turn on the charger. You should start to see the voltage start to rise in the battery pack if the battery charger is working properly.

If the battery fails to charge, you should use another battery charger to see if it takes a charge. If the battery pack still fails to charge, you should get a new one. However, if the battery pack does charge with a different battery charger, you should replace the battery charger for your wheelchair.
